The photo exhibition, The Breath, is about the importance of air for us and all life on this planet. It´s an open air exhibition, part of the H22 City Expo event in Helsingborg, featuring Swedish and international photographers, artists, scientists and activists, showing photographic works related to the importance of the breath and the air we breathe.
Humans take around 1,000 breaths every hour and breath is a prerequisite for life. Many of us take it for granted. Breathing regulates our lives, how our hearts beat, our digestion and immune systems, and more, and is fundamental to our well-being. Breathing and air quality affects our lives, with 99% of the world's population breathing air of a quality that is below the World Health Organisation's (WHO) recommended levels.
In the Helsingborg photographer Olof Jarlbro's documentary photographs, "The dirty business of gold" and "In the sulphur cloud" we meet the everyday lives of workers in polluted air. In artist Cecilia Germain's piece "Aqualung" we encounter the story of the sea as a lung and the black slaves who sank dead to the bottom of the sea. Their breathing was choked and the lungs were filled with water. Among other pieces, we also encounter the human violence against nature; by strangling the supply of oxygen and air purification, life dies in a slow uneven breath.
The Breath exhibition is a collaboration between the Helsingborg company Nederman and Dunkers kulturhus and is presented within the framework of H22. The Breath is curated by Veronica Wiman.
Other contributors to the exhibition include Jonas Classon, Aida Silvestri, Naeem Mohaiemen, Judit Hersko, Anna Ådahl, Francois Dolmetsch, Hans Malmberg (Nordic Museum), Kseniya Halubovich, Foster + Partners, Sophie Green and Justyna Mielnikiewicz.
The opening, which is open to the public, will take place on 30th May at 5pm at Dunkers kulturhus. During the opening, the Helsingborg photographer Olof Jarlbro will participate and talk about "The dirty business of gold" and "In the sulfur cloud".
